Overcome Limiting Beliefs to Achieve Your Goals
To achieve your goals, it’s crucial to address what holds you back. Why don’t you do something you would want, could, or should do? Do you recognize this in yourself? It’s as if something is stopping you. We all recognize it, yet it’s hard to overcome on our own. For years, I have been helping leaders eliminate their limiting beliefs. Being free from these beliefs gives you a lot of energy and opens up new paths.
It’s one of the most important conditions for success and achieving your goals. What influence do you have over this, and what can you do about it?
Beliefs are (often unconscious) assumptions we hold about ourselves and the world around us that we perceive as true. These beliefs have a strong influence on your actions and determine when you do or don’t do something. Many of these beliefs were formed during our childhood, but also through our experiences and interactions with the world around us. These limiting beliefs restrict our success.
Examples of common limiting beliefs include:
- I’m not smart enough (or attractive enough, experienced enough, etc.).
- Managers don’t do those kinds of things.
- They will never hire me for this job.
- I’m not good enough.
How?
It’s not easy to let go of beliefs you’ve held all your life and transform them into new beliefs. Still, here are a few steps to help you get started and succeed.
Below you will find four successful steps to achieve your goals by overcoming your limiting beliefs and unlocking your potential!
1st: Identify and Recognize
Recognize/identify the limiting belief(s) you want to change. These are the beliefs you know are holding you back from spreading your wings. Make a list of the beliefs that limit you.
- How has this limiting belief affected you?
- What negative consequences have you experienced because of it?
- In which areas of your life has it had an impact?
- What does it cost you to hold onto these beliefs, and what is your motivation for holding onto them?
- What will it give you to let them go?
- What reasons do you have for holding onto your limiting belief?
Write it down. Then say to yourself “STOP“.
2nd: Determine What Supports You
Make a conscious choice that you want to change. Decide how you want to change, what you want to become, how you want to act and feel. State in short, positive words what that is.
Instead of saying “I’m not good enough,” say “I have endless qualities” or “I am successful in what I undertake.” The power of the words you use will influence your success. See also my earlier blog 5 Tips to Empower Your Words.
3rd: Make it Big: Feel, Hear, See
Write down your new, positive belief and perhaps hang it up somewhere prominently, so you are constantly reminded of it. This is not all; it’s important that you now start ‘programming’ yourself differently. You can say it, but your brain needs to be reprogrammed. Do this by:
- Actually feeling it.
- Saying it out loud, even to others.
- Visualizing it, see it before you, see how it will bring you success and energy.
In this way, you will make it your own. Objects or certain symbols may also provide extra support. Determine what works best for you, but make it big!
4th: Repeat, Train, and Program!
It’s like sports: you need to ‘train’ to learn new behavior and program yourself. Repeat it daily until it becomes second nature! You’ll see that the above supports you in a powerful way. Make it powerful and don’t be modest in this process.
