Leadership development may sound easy and straightforward, but it’s far from it. In this article, we delve deeper into this concept.

What is Leadership?

Before discussing leadership development, it’s essential to understand the concept of leadership itself. Peter Northouse, from the University of Michigan, defined leadership as:

“The process by which an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.”

And mastering this process often requires development. While some individuals may be born leaders, most need to develop their leadership skills.

Tony Robbins, an American business coach, writer, and entrepreneur, describes leadership as:

“Leadership is the ability to create immediate impact and compel lasting, positive change in others. It’s understanding what motivates people and how to harness the power of influence in yourself and others to achieve a greater vision for mankind at every level.”

Definition of Leadership Development

Leadership development primarily focuses on developing the ability to positively influence others. Importantly, leadership development starts with oneself. How can you lead others if you haven’t sufficiently identified your own talents, beliefs, and barriers? If you can’t influence yourself, how can you influence others?

Leadership development guides (prospective) leaders towards mastery in leadership. This development reflects in both their professional and personal lives.

Which Training Format Suits You?

There are various standard leadership training programs available. However, standard programs with open enrollments may not consider the individual’s starting point and context.

The starting point varies widely among participants, and the context—leading a commercial company versus leading a military unit or within a healthcare organization—demands different qualities and styles.

While standard programs can provide a general foundation, personalized, context-specific training is crucial.
